About Lizard Market

Learn about our mission, our founder Sam, and our passion for reptiles

Meet Sam, Our Founder

I still remember the first time I caught a lizard — I was 13, and it was a bright green anole. He was calm, curious, and surprisingly friendly for a wild little guy. That moment sparked something in me.

Not long after, while I was outside at school, I spotted a young Texas spiny lizard darting across the pavement. I caught him too — and that’s how Spork came into my life. He was feisty, full of personality, and my first real reptile companion. From that point on, I was hooked. Lizards, especially spinys, became my world.

One day at Petco, I met Rocky — my very first bearded dragon. We brought him home and gave him what we thought was a great setup: a big 40-gallon tank and plenty of love. But we didn’t know then what I know now — that he needed proper UVB lighting and calcium. Sadly, Rocky passed away just three weeks later from metabolic bone disease. It was heartbreaking, but it taught me one of the most important lessons of my life: knowledge and care go hand-in-hand.

A couple of months later, I met Tonks — my second bearded dragon and a reminder that every mistake can lead to growth. Today, she lives happily in a spacious 120-gallon enclosure, munching on worms and dubia roaches. Sometimes I take her outside for little walks or let her roam around my room, just exploring.

This journey has been full of joy, learning, and connection. What started as a kid catching a lizard in the yard has turned into a lifelong passion — and I can’t wait to see where it goes next.

Fun Lizard Facts

Tail Regeneration

Many lizard species can drop their tails when threatened and grow them back! This defense mechanism is called autotomy.

Ancient Creatures

Lizards have been around for over 200 million years, surviving alongside and outliving the dinosaurs!

Color Changers

While chameleons are famous for it, many lizards can change color to regulate temperature, communicate, or camouflage.

Super Climbers

Geckos can climb smooth surfaces like glass thanks to millions of tiny hairs on their feet that create molecular attraction!

Third Eye

Many lizards have a "parietal eye" on top of their head that detects light and helps regulate their circadian rhythms.

Diverse Diet

Lizards eat everything from insects and plants to eggs and even other lizards, depending on the species!

Essential Lizard Care Tips

Temperature & Lighting

Most lizards need a temperature gradient in their enclosure with a basking spot and cooler area. UVB lighting is essential for many species to synthesize vitamin D3.

Proper Nutrition

Research your lizard's specific dietary needs. Some are insectivores, others herbivores, and many are omnivores. Always dust insects with calcium powder.

Habitat Setup

Provide appropriate substrate, hiding spots, climbing branches, and water dishes. The enclosure size should match your lizard's adult size.

Regular Health Checks

Monitor your lizard's eating habits, weight, skin condition, and behavior. Find a reptile-experienced veterinarian before you need one.
